Microgaming Bad Beat Jackpot Returns March 19th

The Microgaming Bad Beat Jackpot returns to the network on March 19th.  The promotion was suspended on March 6th so that the network, sometimes referred to as MPN, could update their software for the new promotional terms.

The Microgaming Poker Network’s Bad Beat Jackpot is now temporarily halted at just over €921,000.  When the jackpot is activated again it will be one of the largest in online poker history.

The old Microgaming Bad Beat Jackpot terms required a player to lose four of a kind 8’s or better at a table that took an additional €.50 in rake to fund the jackpot.  The house also took 10% of the jackpot as an admin fee, which could be best described as extra rake.  The jackpot was only distributed to players at the table where the jackpot hit.  This is all about to change.

New Microgaming Bad Beat Jackpot Terms

Now players at all Texas Hold’em tables may opt into the Bad Beat Jackpot.  Players will have the option of paying €.02 per hand to qualify.  Players that choose not to pay the fee will simply not participate in the distribution of the prize pool should there be a jackpot hand at their table or limit.

Instead of the old four of a kind 8’s qualifier, players will now hit the Bad Beat Jackpot by losing any four of a kind as long as both the winner and loser of the hand use both hole cards.  The loser of the hand will win 40% of the jackpot, the winner 20%, table share for opted in players will be 10%, and players that are playing the same stakes when the Bad Beat Jackpot is released will share 10%.  The other 20% will go to seed the next jackpot.  Microgaming will not take any rake from future jackpots.

Unique Approach to Bad Beat Jackpots

Bad Beat Jackpots are a hotly debated topic.  The Party Poker Network and Merge Gaming both dropped the promotion from their offerings.  It has been thought that this type of promotion discouraged some action from savvy players not willing to pay the extra rake.  It also caused a disproportionate amount of funds to be transferred to just a few players which can hurt the overall poker ecology on a network.  The setup Microgaming will roll out Tuesday should allow for more evenly distributed funds when a jackpot is hit.

Online Poker Bad Beat Jackpots a Dying Breed

There are only three major online poker networks that offer Bad Beat Jackpots.  In addition to Microgaming, Bad Beat Jackpots may be found at Boss Media and the Winning Poker Network.  The Winning Poker Network is the only US facing online poker network that offers this promotion.  The Bad Beat Jackpot is tied to TheBeast at Winning Poker.
