Online poker room, Hollywood Poker, shut their doors back in June, after lasting eight years in the industry. The site did not give an explanation as to why they were closing, but they took the steps to move the player balances to RedKings and make sure their players were taken care of. After just a few short months, it seems as though the site is back in action. Hollywood Poker ha now relaunched but has been transformed from the site they once were.
Hollywood Poker is now owned by PLAOR, a social gaming company. Hollywood Poker has now been listed as a free-to-play site which can be enjoyed on the social networking site, Facebook. The site has been known for celebrity endorsement and players would have the ability to play against celebrities, which they are supposedly still offering. The site will also be raising money for charities endorsed by the celebrities of the site.
In a recent interview by Colleen Taylor of TechCrunch, PLAOR CEO, Mark Caldwell, spoke about the relaunch of Hollywood Poker. Caldwell stated that after the company purchased the assets of the ‘old’ Hollywood Poker, the real money site was shut down and players were refunded. Caldwell stated: “Now we’re moving into social entertainment where we want to help connect users to celebrities by using poker and tournaments and other ways to drive revenue for charities.”
According to Caldwell, the site has over 160 celebrities signed up including James Woods, Dennis Quaid, Kevin Pollak, Scott Baio, Peter Facinelli and Kelly Hu. Caldwell admitted in the interview that with so many celebrities, many will be unfamiliar to the poker crowd. Caldwell said this was on purpose; “Everybody cares differently about ‘their’ celebrity, whoever that celebrity is, so we need more than just the ‘A-listers’, if you know what I mean.”
Caldwell also told TechCrunch that the site is trying to accomplish ‘Passion’ with the new poker room. “We want to connect with celebrities and find out things that they’re passionate about and then create games that they’re passionate about and other users will be passionate about, too.”
