EU Extends France’s Online Gambling Free Market Deadline

France now has until October 29th of this year per the European Commission (also known as the EC) to modify their online gambling legislation and come into compliance with article 49 of the European Treaty, the treaty calls for a free market in the service sector with the EU.

France currently only allows 2 local gambling operators to provide online betting services to the countries residents, PMU and Française des Jeux. The original deadline as ordered by the EC was last was month, August of 2007, however that deadline has been extended, and the country now has until October 29th of this year to come into compliance.

Currently online gambling operators are required to display a warning to persons from France, alerting them that the gambling portal is not legal in France, and in essence, they are about to break the law. The new legislation will alleviate the need for the alert, legalizing gambling all over the world for the French, and reopening the closed market.
