Delaware Online Poker Legislation Delayed

According to the Associated Press, a bill that would legalize online table games in the state of Delaware has been delayed. The Delaware Gaming Competitiveness Act of 2012 was supposed to be reviewed and voted on by the state Senate but this was delayed just yesterday.

The Associated Press reported that supporters of the bill were afraid that they would not have enough votes due to one democratic lawmaker’s absence. Just two weeks ago, the House voted in favor of the bill and supporters are hoping to continue the positivity.

The bill would allow online gambling to take place in the state under the authority of the Delaware Lottery. The lottery would control and operate the online table gaming option which would include online poker.

The Senate has proposed two amendments to the bill so far and the bill received two during its time in the House as well. Just yesterday, a new amendment was placed on the bill which calls for a part of the revenues to go toward harness racing purses. The amendment also asks for the amount to be the same that harness racing purses earn from land slot machines.

The amendment was added by the Senate because they are working to keep the tracks competitive in the gambling industry. The tracks are apparently struggling to survive with more gambling venues popping up in surrounding states. The state is looking hard at the possibility of offering online table games since neighboring state, Maryland, is considering adding table games to their gaming venues.

If the state of Delaware does legalize online gaming, they would become the third in the US to offer online gaming behind D.C. and the state of Nevada. Gamblers can only hope that the state legalizes the option so more states in the US will look to offer the same option as well.
