Deadline Day for Chris Christie

Today is the day that gamblers in the United States will find out if the state of New Jersey will begin to offer interstate gambling or if the Governor, Chris Christie, will veto the online gambling bill. Christie has had days to make the decision and today the deadline looms at 12 pm ET time.

Christie will have to make a decision today. The Governor will sign, veto or allow the online gambling bill to move forward without action. Back in 2011, the Governor waited until the last day to veto a similar bill which was created by Senator Ray Lesniak. On the current bill, Lesniak is the main sponsor as well and many are hoping to not see a repeat Christie’s decision.

It was just last week that Christie stated he was concerned about online gambling in the state and how it would affect gambling addiction. This caused the Poker Players Alliance to spring into action and offer their opinion to an anonymous member of Christie’s administration. The PPA met with this person for almost an hour and pled the case for online gambling, even showing how Christie’s worries are unfounded.

Now, Christie must make a decision. If the bill is vetoed, then the state legislature will be allowed to revive it. If the conditional veto is chosen by Christie then the legislature will be able to re-enact the bill with changes and then show it to Christie. If the governor decides to go with an absolute veto, then the legislature will be able to override the vote if at least 2/3 of the members of each house are in agreement.

We will know shortly. Hopefully the governor will make a decision that gamblers in the state will be happy about and will give other states the push they need to begin legislation of their own.
