Daniel Negreanu is a popular name, almost a brand. The poker player is known for challenging various pro players and winning or losing the game. For eight years, he had not won any live poker game, a statistic that is hard to believe.
This year, however, is a new dawn for the poker master. In July this year, the poker hall of famer won his first-ever PokerGO Cup after cashing four times in various games in that tournament, after eight years of winning nothing. Negreanu sounded excited when he spoke publicly, recognizing his win since 2013.
The six-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner did not have to wait long this time for another win. In fact, it only took 61 days for the poker master to win the fifth event of the 2021 Poker Masters.
The $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament attracted a field of 66 players. He swayed his way up to the top, winning $178,200, totaling to earnings of more than $42.7 million. These earnings put Negreanu in third place on poker’s all-time money list.
In addition to the money and the title, Daniel also got many ranking points. He earned 360 card Player of the Year points. These points propelled him into 42nd place in the 2021 POY standings by Global Poker.
Daniel won 179 points in the $10,000 NLH event, putting him in 13th place on the PokerGO Tour leaderboard. He also won the same ranking points towards the Poker Masters leaderboard.
More About the Event
Daniel’s win is one of the top three finishes in the Poker Masters series. He first took third place in event #2: $103,200 NLH, winning 103 points. He beat Brock Wilson to lead in the race for the purple jacket.
Daniel could not hide his joy after moving to the top spot in the fifth event. He said Poker Masters meant a lot to him, reminiscing the first series the brand hosted. During that series, Negreanu realized the people behind Poker Masters were better than him.
This encouraged him to go back to a drawing board to work harder on his poker skills. He noted that his efforts first came to pay off during the recent PokerGO Cup and now in his win in the Poker Masters’ fifth event.
Daniel feels strongly motivated to go one. He feels like he is going to win the jacket.
How Event #5 Unfolded
The final day of event #5 started with Negreanu leading in chips among the five last players at the table. Jeffrey Trudeau entered the match with the least number of chips, ultimately becoming the first to leave. He went all-in preflop with pocket eights which Negreanu’s Q-10 beat.
Negreanu maintained his lead through the river with a ten-high flop, reducing the field to four players. Trudeau, a nine-time WSOP Circuit gold ringer champion, pocketed $52,800.
Jake Daniel followed when his AJ could not beat Nick Petrangelo’s KK. With three players remaining, Vikenty Shegal had the shortest stack. He played for an hour before falling in the hand of Negreanu.
Negreanu and Nick battled for a while until K546K for the event’s winner locked up the title. Nick pocketed $132,000.
