Stephen Chidwick, one of the most popular poker players in the world, has been crowned champion in the Australian Poker Open, which took place at the Star Gold Coast. After a week of intense poker action, the player from the UK managed to cash a total of A$939,000 in three cashes and collected 650 points.
Right now, the Brit has managed to amass more than $34 million in lifetime earnings, and his latest victory was in Event No. 5, which was a no-limit hold ’em competition that required the buy-in of A$25,000.
After claiming the prize, Chidwick successfully managed to take David Peters’ spot on the all-time money list.
Chidwick also managed to confirm his spot as the leader on the all-time money list in Europe. In fact, he is now pretty far above the second-placed German player, Fedor Holz, who will have to earn $2 million to overtake Chidwick.
Third-placed Mikita Badziakouski is $8 million away from first place at the moment.
The Australian Poker Open
The race to win the title of the inaugural Australian Poker Open was really nail-biting, as the first player who emerged in the first place was Mike Watson. However, the Hungarian Andreas Nemeth soon overtook him, winning several events early on.
It was Event No. 5 that ultimately decided the winner, as Chidwick managed to win it and emerge in the first position. He earned a total of A$399,500 from that event, which was enough to make it to the top. However, that wasn’t the end of the saga.
Nemeth played exceptionally well in Event No. 6 and managed to cash in it, getting back to first place. At that point, people were certain that Nemeth was playing one of the best tournaments in his life.
However, there was one more event to go, and that was the Main Event, which required the buy-in of A$100,000.
Chidwick played in his style and managed to make it to three-handed play, where he had to hit the rail. However, he collected enough money and points to return to the top and become the champion of the Australian Poker Open. As a prize, he received an additional $50,000.
The player from the UK stated that the game of poker involved a lot of luck, but that the best players emerged almost always during the course of several events. That’s exactly what happened here.
