Barney Frank’s Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act Gains another Co-Sponsor

Steve Cohen, Tennessee Representative, has signed on to co-sponsor Barney Frank’s IGREA bill. Mr. Cohen signed on earlier this week making the total number of co-sponsors now 39. Cohen has been in the Tennessee State Senate for 24 years and helped establish the lottery in Tennessee. He has seen firsthand how legalized gambling can help the people and the government. This is Mr. Cohen’s first term in the House of Representatives and he serves as a Democrat.

The Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship was founded in 2004 and was funded by lottery sales. More than $800 million has gone to students for their education. Information has come from surveys that have shown the online gambling industry could provide much needed funds to help communities across the United States.

The IGREA would set up a system to license and control the online gambling business and overturn the UIGEA that was passed last year. Many U.S. residents do not even realize there is a ban on online gambling. The percentage of U.S. residents who have stopped online gambling is small, less than half a percentage point. It also hasn’t stopped gambling addictions from taking place. A recent article was published on Bloomberg.com that stated: “Laws that are either widely disobeyed or unworkable are bad laws. A year after its passing, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is both disobeyed and unworkable,” Saumarez-Smith wrote. “The sooner it’s scrapped, the better.”
