The American Gaming Association is a group that was created almost two decades ago to help the gaming industry. The group is involved in many different aspects of gaming including gambling. The group is no stranger to lobbying for what they feel is the right direction for the gaming industry and most recently; this has involved the subject of online gambling.
Just yesterday, an interview was featured on The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd with the American Gaming Association CEO, Geoff Freeman. In the interview, Freeman stated that it is regulation that needs to take place, not prohibition, if consumers want to be protected when gambling with real money online.
Freeman pointed out that players are going to spend money gambling online whether it is legal or not, so now is the time to regulate. In the interview, Freeman stated: “We’re on the side of regulation. Prohibition simply doesn’t work. Freeman was strong in his statements and commented that anyone trying to thwart online gambling is simply behind the times.
Freeman stated that the opponents of online gambling want to ‘pretend the internet doesn’t exist’ and that we can simply ‘squeeze the internet back into the bottle’. The CEO continued with the fact that regulation of online gambling is the best choice if consumers are to be protected. The integrity of the games can be ensured and law enforcement would have the tools needed to regulate the system.
Freeman further stated that the federal government needs to set standards and minimum consumer protections must be set for the industry. The CEO stated that in the absence of the federal government, the states are moving forward with their own legislation. He continued with calling out the government stating that it is their responsibility.
As of now, the US has three states that offer legalized gambling in some form. More states are set to consider legislation in 2014.
