2019 SCOOP — A Short Reminder While We Wait for 2020 Edition

PokerStars announced its 2020 edition of the Spring Championship Of Online Poker (SCOOP) recently, offering more than $85 million in guaranteed prizes, with $22 million to be awarded on the final Sunday of the competition. Moreover, players will have an opportunity to grab from a daily $1.5 million in guaranteed prizes.

While we’re waiting for the 2020 edition to start, let’s take a look at the SCOOP that took place last year and see how players performed.

The first thing to take into account is that more than $100 million was awarded in prizes in 2019. The guaranteed prizes were first set to $75, but the immense interest in playing events that are part of this tournament made the final prize pool rise to $100 million.
A total of 1,019,086 players were recorded over 218 events. Approximately $460,800 was awarded in prizes per event.

Gianluca Creates Poker History

The odds of winning the main event of a big poker tournament are very low, and you have to be very good to do it. The odds of winning two main events in a row is equal to impossible. However, the 2019 edition of SCOOP proved the statistics wrong, as the player named Gianluca “Tankanza” Speranza defied all odds.

Speranza won the 2018 SCOOP Main Event when he managed to outlast 653 opponents and won a total of $1,133,160.03 as his reward. Then, he applied for the 2019 Main Event of the SCOOP — and won once again! This time he had to face 661 opponents and won a total of $1,028,203.24.

By doing this, Gianluca cemented his name in all poker books as being the only player in the history of any ‘COOP tournament to win two main events — back to back.

The single biggest score in 2019 SCOOP was won in the $10,300 Main Event by Gianluca Speranza. The next one was Jacobo “jakobgold” Montoya, who managed to top the $1,050 Main Event, winning a total of $688,588.42.

After him was Juan “Malaka$tyle” Pardo, who took part in the $25,000 High Roller and won $549,421.48 for his effort. Other players who did well in the 2019 tournament include Jean “Jack Wastes” Fillipe, Vincent “gordon0410” Bosca, “pkrbt,” “josef_shvejk,” and others.

So far, the 2016 SCOOP Main Event seemed the most popular, as there was a prize pool of $8 million. The winner was Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi, who managed to win a total of $1,488,000.88 for his effort.

However, from the likes of it, the 2020 version might have the potential to break all the records that have been set so far. One of the main reasons for that is that the majority of poker players who prefer live tournaments are now unable to attend them, as all have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
