Nancy Todd’s Casino Measure Rejected by Arkansas Supreme Court

Poker player Nancy Todd has been working hard to see a new measure passed in the state of Arkansas which would bring four new casinos to the state.  But the measure has now been rejected by the Supreme Court of the state. The court ruled that the language of the proposal failed to properly inform voters.

The new amendment to the constitution would have given Poker Palace LLC, a company based in Las Vegas, the exclusive rights to own as well as operate casinos in four different counties of the state. The proposal had collected over 78,000 signatures which were required but officials rejected the plan after a recommendation was sent from Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel.

McDaniel claimed that the language in the measure was vague and insufficient. McDaniel also stated that the proposal did not inform voters that the law could repeal the existing electronic gambling option in the state. Todd had revised the piece of legislation and filed a lawsuit to have the measure put on the November ballot but the Supreme Court decided to rule that the signatures were invalid. The Supreme Court made this ruling because they stated the signatures were gathered before the changes were made to the language of the bill.

Gamblers in the state will now have to wait even longer to have access to casino style gambling. Currently the state only offers pari-mutuel wagering at dog and horse race tracks. However, this will not be the end of potential casino gambling in the state. Many people are for the option and have made clear that millions of dollars in revenues leave the state each year and go to neighboring states such as Mississippi, Louisiana and Oklahoma by those who enjoy gambling. Hopefully Todd will not give up and the state will see another shot at the gambling options.
