2024 has already produced some huge moments in both live and online poker, and the most recent example took place at Wynn Resorts Las Vegas. The Wynn Millions event just recently wrapped up, and it was five full days of some terrific poker action.
The initial prize pool at this event was set to be $3 million, but that total actually increased to nearly $3.8 million by the time the entry pool was updated. In total, 1,180 players paid the $3,500 buy-in to get into this event, and it was Neel Murthy that came away with the title.
The total win for Murthy was just over $502,000, and Christopher Frank was able to claim $500,000 with a second place finish. Those two players made a deal during heads up action, and that did take some of the drama and excitement from the final few hands.
151 players were paid out as a part of this event, and there were some important Card Player Player of the Year points handed out as well.
Murthy Comes Up Big
There were a number of big players that showed up to compete in the Wynn Millions event, and it was Murthy that was standing out right away. Steven Jones, 2023 World Series of Poker runner-up, finished this event in 13th place, and there were other top players in the mix.
When it came time for the final day of action, only five players remained with a chance to win the final pot. Murthy was sitting in first place in terms of chips when those players sat down at the final table, and he entered heads up play with a 3:1 lead over Christopher.
It was Christopher that won many of the initial hands in heads up action, and that put pressure on Murthy to strike a deal. In the end, Murthy was able to hold off his competitor to win the top prize, but only $2,000 separated the top two places.
Not only did Murthy take home $502,000, but he also secured 1,440 Card Player Player of the Year points. That is a race that lasts throughout the entire year, and Murthy is currently sitting in 31st place.
While some poker tournaments tend to have a signature hand that determines that winner, that just wasn’t the case when looking at the action in this event.
Final Leaderboard
While Murthy and Christopher were able to take home the top prizes in this event, there were other players that walked away with a big prize. Haim Gabay finished this event in third place, and his prize was $301,000.
Everyone in the top six was able to claim at least $100,000 in this event, but the money did decrease significantly with each spot. Paul Lozano Martin claimed $223,372 with a fourth place finish, while Jesse Kandola and Pedro Ingles were both between $100,000-$165,000.
This event is only going to set the stage for some bigger events put on by Wynn later in the year.
