After several weeks of ongoing poker action at Rio in Las Vegas, the 2021 World Series of Poker Main Event has ended. This end came with a crown for the German Koray Aldemir and a whopping $8 million. The Main Event attracted 6,650 players, becoming the tenth WSOP main event to attract a huge number of players.
Yet, this was not the first Aldemir’s win in a live poker tournament. The 31-year-old poker player had over $12 million winnings in prize money from previously played poker tournaments in the course of his career. In fact, Koray has participated in some of the biggest poker tournaments in the past few years.
He has several wins from playing World Poker Tour (WTP), Aria High Roller, Triton Poker Super High Roller, and US Poker Open. Koray’s last biggest win was in 2016 when he scored the third position in the WSOP $111,111 No-Limit Hold’em High Roller going for $2.1 million in prize money.
With the recent win, Koray’s live cashes has moved from $12 million to over $20 000,000. This winning puts him in fourth place in Germany’s all-time money list.
Day 9 Action
On Wednesday, November 17, three players returned for Day 9 action. From the start, Aldemir had an advantage as he had the most chips. Yet, his win did not come easy.
While he was the more experienced poker player than Jack Oliver and Goerge Holmes, Koray had to apply maximum efforts to get the crown because his opponents came prepared.
The early stages of Day 9 saw Holmes and Oliver fight to get to a heads-up play. Three hours into the game, the fight between Holmes and Oliver ended when the first player sent Oliver packing. Oliver walked home with a prize of $3 million.
Exciting Heads-Up Play
Going into heads-up play, Holmes looked like the underdog in the game. He had only cashed once in live cash before his appearance in the 2021 WSOP Main Event. Previously, Holmes had finished at 213th place during the 2019 Main Event for over $50k.
On the other hand, Aldemir was the favourite starting the game with a high number of chips and years of poker gaming experience. Despite this, Holmes conquered many hands, climbing his way up and taking the lead from Koray.
Aldemir later acknowledged that he was stressed when Holmes took the lead from him. However, this did not distract the 2021 WSOP champion from his gameplay. He used his extensive experience in playing poker games and regained his position, and won several hands.
With the 223rd hand in play, Holmes put all his chips in, which led to Koray calling, leading to the historic win. This marked the first time Koray won the WSOP bracelet and a large sum of money, $8,000,000.
Aldemir described his experience playing the WSOP Main Event as crazy. But, he thanked all the players that participated. With his win, he joins other world-known WSOP bracelet winners, including Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, among others.
Holmes took second place with $4.3 million. His runner-up finish makes him a great player in Georgia and across the country.
