Vienna Town Council Plans to Object a Fairfax County Casino Proposal Next Year

Ocean Casino Resort Plans to Unveil Its Upgrades on July 1

Richmonders recently rejected a gaming proposal in a ballot. Yet, the Vienna Town Council has disclosed in the first meeting of this month that it will oppose the construction of a gaming property in Fairfax County in its 2024 session.

The Casino’s Opposition

Virginia’s gaming operators are performing well. Studies indicate that 80 percent of its casinos are thriving while 20 percent of venues are struggling.

Its lawmakers passed a casino bill several years ago that allowed Richmond, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Danville, and Bristol to host casinos as they are economically disadvantaged.

Voters in Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth, and Norfolk held two casino ballots and rejected a gaming proposal. Their decision created an opportunity for another region or city to allow a casino.

Petersburg seized the gaming chance and is reported to advocate for a gaming venue. Some people claim that Tysons Corner in Fairfax County is the preferred casino site. However, the Vienna Town Council has vowed to object to it even though it lacks the sole mandate to block the casino’s construction.

The Town Council’s Opposition

The Vienna Town Council approves priorities for the next year’s legislative session. The town drafted 18 priorities for next year several months ago. Still, it added the Fairfax County Casino as its 19th priority as it opposes the introduction of casino gaming in the region.

Steven Brigilia, Vienna Town’s Attorney submitted the priority to the Vienna Town Council. He stated that some council members supported his priority while Chuck Anderson commented on its wording.

The attorney’s no-casino priority stated that Vienna Town objects to any move to set up or facilitate the construction of a gaming venue in Fairfax County. Still, it opposes the establishment of a casino in the Tysons locality. It adds that a gaming facility would have a negative effect on Vienna residents as it would increase traffic, erode their morals, and make independent entrepreneurs incur extra operating costs.

Vienna Council Prioritizes the No-Casino Rule

Nisha Patel urged the town council to increase the no-casino rule’s rank in their legislative priorities. She stated in the council meeting that the casino proposal is a threat to Fairfax.

Howard J. Springsteen, another council member, backed the no-casino priority. He sided with Patel saying that Fairfax County lacks an opportunity for setting up a casino.

Anderson stated that adding another casino in Vienna, especially at Tysons Corner will interfere with the resident’s comfort. Besides, causing traffic congestion, the town council member believes that the property will increase rends for local enterprises and attract new business that will negatively impact the community.

His plea influenced other council members as they voted to move the rule from priority 6 to priority 2. Therefore, it will be under more scrutiny next year. Moreover, it has a high likelihood of getting approved.
