A union that represents workers in Vegas casinos issued a report stating that a total of 22 deaths were recorded in the city’s industry since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in the US in March. On top of that, the union reported 352 hospitalizations. These numbers refer to union members and their families.
The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 joined forces with Bartenders Union 165 and issued a statement on Friday that claimed that the number of hospitalized workers and their family members has grown by 800% after the casinos were allowed to operate again in the state of Nevada starting June 4.
The union represents a total of 60,000 workers from the industry, including all kinds of bartenders, porters, housekeepers, servers, cooks, and other casino and resort workers in Las Vegas and Reno. They are now calling on Gov. Steve Sisolak, legislature of the state, and casino operators to invest more energy to protect their workers from COVID-19.
Some of the requests that the Culinary Union has for operators is to clean guest rooms regularly and introduce mandatory tests for all employees who are returning to work. They request that all workers have access to regular testing and want operators to enforce social distancing as part of the safety plan, which should be available to the public on the web.
Nevada gambling regulators haven’t been idle in this regard, as all casino visitors and workers are required to wear face masks while inside casinos. All casino operators were required to submit their health and safety plans before reopening to show how they plan to fight against the spread of the disease.
The Union Addresses State Lawmakers
The workers union addressed the lawmakers of Nevada, asking them to pass legislation to enforce daily cleaning of hotel rooms and other measures that would protect the workers. The lawmakers are currently gathering in sessions where they address social justice and criminal reforms, as well as some measures regarding budget cuts. At this point, it remains unclear whether they will deal with the union requests in one of their sessions or not.
Nevada’s Department of Health reported an additional 1,182 cases of COVID-19 disease in the state, making it a total of 34,477 confirmed cases. Moreover, the number of people who passed away from this disease is 646 at the time of publication in Nevada.
However, the actual number of infections is believed to be much higher, as many people are not tested for the disease. Many people are believed to have the disease but are asymptomatic, meaning they don’t feel sick. According to the Department of Health, more than 1,000 people are now hospitalized in Nevada as COVID-19 patients.
