Shippensburg’s Parx Casino Is Set to Launch on February 3rd

Parx Casino recently revealed that it will open its Shippensburg Township mini-casino on February 3 at 10:00 a.m. Its owners had to change its opening date from November 2022 due to supply chain disruptions and construction delays. But, the Category 4 gaming property disclosed that it will soon open its fourth casino in Pennsylvania.

More Details About a Satellite Casino

Pennsylvania changed its gambling legislation several years ago, and it included satellite casinos. They are gaming sites with Category 4 licenses which allow them to provide a few casino games. Such venues have to be a specific distance from commercial casinos.

Satellite casinos provide 750 slots and 30 table games. The Keystone State has four satellite gaming licenses. Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment will run the Parx Casino with 73,000 square feet of gaming space.

Shippensburg’s Parx Casino

The casino is in Cumberland County at 250 Conestoga Drive in Shippensburg Township. It will cover half of the former 139,410-square-foot Lowe’s Building. GW Cumberland Op Co. owns the casino license. It is a company that Parx Casino’s parent firm owns thus operating as Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment.

The $65 million gaming project will have a high-end bar and restaurant that can host 100 clients, 30 electronic table games, and 500 slot machines. Parx Casino officials revealed that the Shippensburg gaming site will provide 100 temporary and 100 permanent jobs.

Still, it is tied to a Category 2 license holder since it will be a Category 4 casino. Thus, the casino will have 300-750 slot machines and not more than 30 table games. Moreover, the law restricts Category 4 casinos from being built less than 25 miles from other established casinos.

The Category 4 Casino

After Pennsylvania’s 2017 Gaming Expansion, its Gaming Commission gave companies with local flagship gaming sites the right to develop mini-casinos. Bensalem Casino is Parx Casino Shippensburg’s parent casino and it is among the best-performing gambling properties in the state.

Parx Casino’s $8.1 million bid won in the 2018 bidding round to run a satellite casino. Today, Lawrence County, Westmoreland County, and York County have Category 4 casinos.

South Middleton Township, Shippensburg, and Carlisle Borough got a chance to construct Category 4 casinos. Even so, the two localities applied the “Municipality opt-out clause.” Shippensburg permitted a mini-casino in the commercial district through a conditional-use ordinance. Its application succeeded in January 2022 and construction began in February.

Parx Casino Bensalem

Shippensburg’s casino is linked to Bensalem’s Parx Casino, which is at 2999 Street Road and 20 minutes north of Philadelphia. It is a 260,000-square-foot entertainment and gaming property with over 3,320 slot machines, and 188 tables games such as roulette, poker, craps, and baccarat. Besides, the casino has a 48-table poker room which hosts high-stakes events.

Even so, Parx Casino Bensalem has different restaurant options like fine dining and grab-and-go. Clients can select Liberty Bell Gastropub’s farm-to-fork dishes or Parxgrill’s meals. Oliveto offers Italian food and New York-style pizza. Bambu Noodle House offers Asian cuisine.
