Las Vegas has been the center of crime in Nevada for the last couple of weeks, even though there was an increased law enforcement presence in the city. Although crimes in Las Vegas aren’t low at any time, their rate has been skyrocketing after the reopening of casinos.
Latest Shooting Update
One of the most recent shooting incidents was at the Aria Resort and Casino, located on the Strip, on Sept. 15. The incident occurred in the valet area in Aria, but a motive for the shooting wasn’t immediately clear. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries in the shooting, but the suspected gunman remains at large.
One unidentified woman was the only person to be wounded during by gunfire. The woman was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Luckily, her injuries were considered minor, and she is reportedly feeling alright and expected to make a full recovery.
According to witnesses, there were six shots fired, but it remains unclear why the shooter used his weapon in the first place. The incident is still under investigation.
To make matters worse, that wasn’t the only shooting in the area recently. Three reports of gunfire in under a week has officials alarmed and looking for answers.
Clark County Sheriff and the Head of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, Joe Lombardo, believes the violence has been propagated by out-of-town visitors who come to Las Vegas but cannot visit nightclubs, casinos, and entertainment venues due to the ongoing pandemic. Lombardo also claims the use of drugs and alcohol exacerbates the problem.
Other Crimes in Las Vegas
Another recent gun incident transpired near Harrah’s, where local police chased and apprehended a suspect with a gun after reports of a person being beaten near the casino. That arrest was just one of the more than 1,100 arrests made in Las Vegas during recent months. Police recovered at least 60 firearms in those arrests.
Dori Koren, the Captain of Las Vegas Police, said in a statement that it was important for the department to “acknowledge that we are experiencing a crime problem.” Koren didn’t point blame in any particular direction, instead stating that 2020 has “put us in some uncharted territories.”
Earlier in September, a melee broke out at Encore, with 20+ people involved in a brawl. Property damage estimates totaled roughly $15,000, and Encore wants the brawlers to pay for that. Those involved in the fight remain unidentified, but they were not guests of the hotel. Instead, they were individuals who went to the pool at Encore, which was open to the public that day.
Koren says the police department has deployed additional patrols and specialized units, including gun- and drug-sniffing dogs, to the Strip in an effort to slow and prevent criminal activity. Local officials hope these actions will solve the equation and lower the crime rate as much as possible during these trying times.
