Hofstra University Opposes Las Vegas Sands’ New York Casino Plan

Las Vegas Sands’ New York casino plan is facing more opposition as Hofstra University is its latest opponent. The Vegas-based casino operator intends to construct an entertainment site in New York on the Nassau Coliseum. Still, it will have a huge event space, a casino, and a hotel.

Hofstra University’s Opposition

Local stakeholders started criticizing the casino plan shortly after Las Vegas Sands announced it. But Hofstra University recently wrote an open letter criticizing the project.

The letter stated that the Nassau Hub isn’t suitable for a gaming site since diverse suburban communities and educational institutions surround it including a graduate school. These shouldn’t be prone to increased crime and traffic congestion.

Besides, it might adversely affect local enterprises. The university stated that New York City has other locations appropriate for a casino which aren’t near many educational institutions with a huge youthful population.

Other Opposers

The Garden City Village Board decided to officially oppose Las Vegas Sands’ project plan. But its vote was a symbolic gesture as it lacks an influence in the final decision-making process.

The local community claims that Nassau shouldn’t host a casino as the New York gaming regulator and the project’s developers are facing opposition. Peter Jacobs from the Nostrand Gardens Civic Association stated that casinos won’t benefit the county and community since they will promote crime.

Even so, Las Vegas Sands sent a statement to News 12, a news outlet, stating that they are interested in further discussing with interested individuals and the Garden City village to convince them about the resort’s benefit.

An Unprecedented Partnership

Hofstra University stated that it opposed the casino project due to its students’ welfare. Surprisingly, the Nassau Community College believes that the resort will benefit students and staff. It signed an alliance to be Las Vegas Sands’ main training center once its casino proposal is approved.

The partnership involves experiential learning and internships for students who aspire to work for the gaming operator in the future. Dr. Maria Conzatti, Nassau Community College Acting President, stated that the invention of a new industry that will offer thousands of job vacancies in various sectors will benefit local communities and students that the college serves.

Dr. Conzatti added that its decision to partner with leading gaming operators such as Las Vegas Sands will improve its curriculum by offering more internship and mentorship opportunities, and training programs. Moreover, it will help community members, workers, and adult students to grow their career paths.

New York is holding debates to legalize online gaming. But it is uncertain whether it will change its gaming regulations this year. Even so, Las Vegas Sands’ casino will be the fifth brick-and-mortar casino once the state passes it.

It has a few off-track betting (OTB) sites offering electronic gadgets. Yet, its mobile sports betting sector is thriving and it pays a 51 percent tax rate on adjusted gross income to the state thus setting new tax records.
