Could Macau Be Severely Affected By Coronavirus?

It’s no secret that coronavirus has been a huge threat to Chinese people for the last couple of days. Ever since the first couple of cases of this deadly virus were discovered, Macau has been very careful about controlling who comes in.

Wuhan is one of the regions where most cases were reported, and visitors from that area, as well as many other regions throughout China, are being checked upon entering Macau.

However, that’s not the only thing that Macau needs to do to protect its residents and especially people who work in casinos and other businesses. Dealers and other casino workers are exposed to a lot of people on a daily basis, and their protection needs to be taken into account.

One of the ways to protect them was setting up body temperature scanners in casinos, which could immediately pick up whether someone sick entered the casino.

How Many Confirmed Cases In Macau?

At the moment, there are a total of five confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Macau. However, an additional 11 people are currently being held in the hospital and being observed, but it’s not confirmed whether they have a virus or not.

All these people actually left one of the infected provinces, Hubei, before their airport was officially closed.

Chinese New Year Celebration Cancelled

China pays a lot of attention to one of the most important holidays in the country — the Chinese New Year. This is the time of the year when a lot of Chinese residents from all parts of China travel to Macau to enjoy the festivities.

Macau, on the other hand, always has something extra prepared for the visitors, including a lot of amazing fireworks, numerous parties, and more.

But it wasn’t meant to be this year. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, officials in Macau had to cancel all New Year festivities.

This was definitely a serious blow for Macau’s revenue, but it’s something that should be the primary concern at the moment. In fact, the health and well-being of both employees and visitors should be put as the most important task at this moment.

Tourist Arrivals Down 80 Percent

Just as expected, many people decided not to visit Macau, fearing the coronavirus. That resulted in a huge decrease in visitors. According to this Bloomberg article, the number of visitors plunged 80 percent when compared to last year.

As previously stated, this is usually the most important time of the year for Macau due to the Lunar New Year. Nevertheless, the coronavirus got in the way, and the majority of visitors canceled their visits to the Asian gambling capital.

At the moment, there are more than 2,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and more than 54 people have died from it. Chinese authorities are doing their best to prevent it from spreading further into other regions and outside of China.
