“Circa” Said to Bring Real Change to Downtown Las Vegas

Not many casinos in Las Vegas are built from the ground up. In fact, it’s been more than 40 years since we saw a company actually build the building that would host a casino.

Last time we saw that was in the 80s when the popular Sundance opened its doors to visitors. The casino was later renamed to Fitzgerald and is now called The D Las Vegas. This was the time when the Fremont Street Experience was still open for cars.

However, no new casino building was built for 40 years in Las Vegas. Operators came and go, and the existing buildings were rebranded over and over again. However, that’s not the case with Circa. The newest $1 billion casino recently opened in Sin City.

The completion of this project was a huge success for the owners, Greg and Derek Stevens. The brothers also own the D and Golden Gate in the Entertainment Capital of the World and are working hard on bringing change to the city.

The casino is said to be a “game-changer,” according to Andrew Simon, CEO of the Fremont Street Experience, a street that runs in front of the casino. Simon stated for most of his life, he hadn’t seen a new casino being built in Las Vegas, adding that Circa was a “huge deal for Fremont Street Experience.”

Other Casinos Welcome Circa to the Family

Other casinos welcomed the new member to the Las Vegas family, despite being aware of the fact that Circa could be a stiff competitor for visitors.

Jonathan Josse, the Plaza CEO, stated for Las Vegas Sun that Circa was going to “add a new dimension downtown.” Moreover, he added that they weren’t only into casinos on hotels, but also in the “redevelopment of downtown Las Vegas business.” Josse made a valid point stating that all casinos in downtown Las Vegas would profit if that part of the city developed further. Therefore, the casino across the street welcomed Circa with arms wide open.

Kevin Glass, Downtown Grand General Manager, agreed with Josse on those points. He stated that everything good for downtown was good for every business in that part of the city. Moreover, he added that they couldn’t wait to “see what Derek and his team have in store.”

Executive Director of the UNLV, the think tank located in Brookings Mountain West, said that downtown Las Vegas was originally planned to become the “large-scale area for casinos.” However, the Strip took the lead and became the center of Sin City.

Moreover, he added that downtown “re-emerged in recent years.” Even though it was surpassed in the 50s and 60s by the Strip, this part of Las Vegas is coming back to life as many young tourists want to feel the vibe of a traditional city and “vibrant street life.”

On top of all, Circa brings hope to the entire city to attract more tourists in the dark hour for the Las Vegas economy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
