Ozzie Albies will get the mic’d up segment on Sunday Night Baseball when the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres meet at 7:08 p.m. ET on Sunday. After a 12-1 drubbing to open the series, Atlanta has bounced back with a pair of 5-2 wins in a series pitting playoff hopefuls among one another.
Bryce Elder will get the ball for the Braves. He made his Major League debut, allowing three earned runs on six hits across 5.2 innings pitched, and got the win against Washington.
Veteran right-hander Yu Darvish is going for San Diego. He’s off to a slow start this season, giving up nine earned runs in 7.2 innings pitched. The worst part is it’s on eight hits due to six walks.
The line opened at Padres -1.5 with an over/under of 8, where they stick as of this writing.
San Diego Padres Betting Preview: Put balls in play
It sounds cliche, but the Padres could do a lot by giving themselves a chance to get on base. So far, San Diego is striking out 10.14 times per game, the fourth-worst rate in the league through the first week. The offense is scoring 4.45 runs per game to go with a .237 average and .688 OPS, which are around the league average.
Jurickson Profar has started the season with team-leading three home runs and nine RBIs. The top two hitters, though, are veterans Manny Machado (.350, four 2Bs, 8 Rs, 6 RBIs) and Eric Hosmer (.394, five 2Bs, 3 RBIs, 3 Rs).
Darvish, a six-time All-Star including last season, has struggled in San Diego, particularly his starts of the season. The former Cy Young runner-up two seasons ago needs to limit his walks and allow his bullpen to have a chance to close off a victory.
Atlanta Braves Betting Preview: Limiting chances
San Diego’s strikeouts play into the Braves’ strength. Atlanta’s pitching staff generates 9.91 strikeouts per game, the sixth-best mark across baseball. But the Braves’ staff is allowing 5.36 runs per game, the fourth-worst rate in the league.
Now, they have losses of 12-1 and 11-2 that inflate that number a bit. After giving up six runs to the Reds three times in the opening series, they’ve allowed four runs or less in four of the last five games.
The offense has been fine and able to match that. Matt Olson has proven to be a great acquisition as he’s hitting .412 with three doubles, two home runs, and seven runs scored. Marcell Ozuna has been hot, hitting .325 with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Betting Prediction
So far, 59% of the money is on the Padres to cover 1.5 with a betting split on the over/under of 8.0. The Braves are 8-1 in their last nine games against the Padres in San Diego, and the under is 13-5 in the last 18 meetings between the two overall.
