The World Series of Poker decided to test out a Big Blind Ante format during the WSOPC as well as reviewing venues that implemented the ante during game play to see if it might be a format worth trying. After this review and trial run, the WSOP made the announcement this week that there will be Big Blind Ante events added to the 2018 schedule. Eight gold bracelet events out of 78 on the schedule this summer will have the format of Big Blind Ante.
According to the WSOP, a select few side events will also include this format. Two Daily Deepstacks and some Mega Satellite events, plus the $25k and $50k weekend events hosted at King’s Lounge will feature the Big Blind Ante. Because the events are various types and buy-in ranges, the WSOP will be able to monitor game play and decide if the Big Blind Ante should be expanded on in future events.
The Big Blind Ante format works on poker games with an ante. With this format, players will not place an ante on each hand but the player in the Big Blind will post an ante, the same amount as the Big Blind amount. An example would be if the blinds are at 500 and 1,000. The player in the Big Blind would post the 1,000 blind and then place an additional 1,000 for the Ante.
The ante is dead and brought into the pot. The Big Blind is live and is considered pre-flop betting. The nice aspect of this ante format is that players do not have to remember to add an ante to each hand or try to figure out if they did or didn’t place the ante. Dealers also do not have to focus on the ante, going from player to player collecting chips. The pace of game play is sped up which allows more hands to be played at a quicker rate.
