Poker has always been an interesting game, and the poker industry has always been considered a lively and vigorous one. A lot of exciting things happen in a week, let alone in a year. Let’s take a look back at the year behind us. 2018 was certainly a very successful year for the poker industry as it has made a significant advance towards making this game more popular around the globe. So, here are just some of the interesting things that happened in the last 12 months.

Hellmuth’s rant

Phil Hellmuth can be quite… controversial at times. One of the things he will be remembered by apart from outstanding poker skills is offending James Campbell during a 2018 WSOP Main Event. He just lost it at one point and started speaking out of turn as he was obviously irritated by Campbell’s style of play.

Shared liquidity in the US and Europe

Delaware, New Jersey, and Nevada offered a combined platform for poker players from these three states, lifting the experience of playing poker to another level in the States. Europe followed soon as France and Spain signed a similar deal which later included Portugal as well.

Staples brothers make a weight loss bet and win

Two popular Canadian poker players and brothers Jaime and Matt Staples were quite different in regard to their weight. Jaime was 304 pounds while Matt was only 134 lbs. They made a prop bet that they will be the same weight in just a year and the person to propose such a bet was Bill Perkins. The two brothers won $150,000 after weighing 188.3 lbs both after a year.

John Cynn wins WSOP Main Event

John Cynn won the 2018 World Series of Poker Main Event and banked a total of $8.8 million after playing an extraordinary final table against some of the biggest names in the poker history. He even played the longest heads-up battle ever and made the spectacular finish.

Poker player shot in Texas

Unfortunate events happen to poker players from time to time in their private life as well, and Tom Steinbach was one of them when he was shot at 3betpanda in Texas after someone attempted an armed robbery. Luckily, Steinbach is okay now, although he was shot in the back, and the robber was captured.

WSOP Player of the Year – Shaun Deeb

Shaun Deeb had a fantastic year behind him as he managed to win two WSOP bracelets at $25,000 PLO High Roller ($814,179) and $10,000 No Limit Six Max Championship ($1,402,683). Furthermore, he won a total of 20 WSOP cashes just in 2018.
