Brett Parise, a university student from Indiana, won the first round of the PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour in Manilia Monday. He won $180,000 and a place in December’s grand final in Sydney. Parise was the youngest player in the final nine. More then 200 players from 30 different countries had started in the three day event.
Joe Hachem, World Series of Poker Champion in 2005, and Vanessa Rousso, a star from the American Poker Circuit were eliminated the first day. Parise had been playing poker since he was 18 and won his seat in the tour through a free online competition.
All nine finalists shared a pool of $500,000 in prize money. Parise said he saw the game as a good way of making money but he doubted whether he would take it up full time. “I’ll finish my degree but I don’t have any idea what I will do after that. I like poker but it won’t be my life,” he stated.
The next leg of the APPT takes place in Seoul in September and two other venues in Asia yet to be decided before finishing up in Sydney.
