Five Remain at the WSOP Main Event Final Table

The World Series of Poker Main Event table was back in action yesterday, with the remaining nine players ready to battle it out to see who the 2016 title winner will be. Game play began at 5 p.m. and after just 97 poker hands, the table would see just five players remaining. Qui Nguyen took a huge chip lead over the remaining players, setting himself up with a solid stack going into the second day of play.

The first to go would be Fernando Pons who took on Cliff Josephy by the 16th hand of the night. Pons held A-6 off-suit and was going up against Josephy’s K-J, also off-suit. The flop showed K-Q-3 with a 9 on the turn and King on the river, giving Josephy the hand the Pons an exit from the tournament. It would be a few more hours until the next player, Jerry Wong would be eliminated in 8th place. Wong was followed by Griffin Benger in 7th and Kenny Hallaert in 6th to leave five remaining.

Players will be back in action beginning at 4:30 p.m. today with live coverage starting via ESPN2 at 5 p.m. Qui Nguyen will come to the table with a massive chip lead, almost double to Cliff Josephy who is second in chips, helping him have a commanding lead as Day 2 begins. Each player would like to the be the last one standing as first place will receive just over $8 million plus the gold WSOP bracelet and bragging rights for the year.
