Women in the game of poker are not as common as I would like to think they are. Of course you have your top women players such as Vanessa Selbst or Jennifer Harman, but it is rare to see a woman walk away with victories at higher-profile tourneys, let alone in any open WSOP event.
Selbst was the last female player to earn gold glory back in 2012 and has been the only female since 2008 to win a WSOP bracelet in an open event, which means both males and females were able to compete.
However, this fact has now changed. Dana Castaneda competed in the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament – aka Event #54 – and outlasted almost 3,000 players to earn the first place win and her very first gold bracelet! Castaneda enjoys the game of poker and is from the great state of California where she works as a cocktail waitress.
To say Castaneda was intimidated to compete in the event would be an understatement. She thought she would be the first player to be eliminated but actually made it to the very end and claimed the first place finish! Commenting on the win, Castaneda stated: “I was scared to even enter the ladies event because there were 900 players. I can’t believe I outlasted close to 3,000 in this. It’s amazing. I don’t even know how to describe it.”
Castaneda took out Jason Bigelow in heads up play to claim the win and earned just over $454,000 for her efforts. She currently works at the Morongo Casino and plans on continuing at her job despite the big win, adding that all of her co-workers will be floored when they see the bracelet as they did not know she was going to compete!
