Major gambling operator of both land based and online gaming options, William Hill, has now confirmed that a cyber attack took place this past Tuesday within their website, knocking their online gambling customers offline. Wagers were unable to be placed online and service remained intermittent on Wednesday despite servers going back online.
William Hill confirmed that a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack took place that prevented the online gaming site from operating correctly. The problem with a DDoS attack is the servers are flooding with excess traffic which leads to the site not being able to operate. On Tuesday the site of William Hill went down as the UEFA Champions League fixtures were played which would hurt the company financially.
When such attacks take place at online gambling sites, it is usually during time frames of increased activity. Before or during big sporting events, the attacks can take place since the time and date of the event are known far in advance.
William Hill Help is the customer support team of the company who announced late yesterday via Twitter that the tech team of Will Hill will continue to work on solving the problem throughout the night. Reports later surfaced that stated there were still issues with connecting to the site. Players have been directed by William Hill to use the mobile application for placing wagers for now.
The attack on William Hill is nothing new as gambling sites are targeted by hackers who wish to make disruptions and cause mayhem. Many felt that the attack on William Hill was done with the Mirai botnet which is a major DDoS virus that was involved in attacking the servers of Dyn recently, a tech company that controls the majority of the DNS infrastructure of the internet. According to Dyn, the attack on the company was the most powerful of its nature ever recorded and resulted in such sites as CNN, Netflix and Twitter being knocked offline.
