Wildcard Fever Matchup: St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers

Red hot since their managerial change, the Cardinals are less than a game out of a wildcard spot. They have played great baseball recently, and have a legitimate change to get back to their glory in 2018.

The Dodgers on the other hand have struggled recently and just have not been able to put anything together. They struggled in their weekend series with the Mariners, which has been the trend of late.

St. Louis Cardinals

Led by the power of Matt Carpenter, who has gone deep 33 times this year, this offense has been fantastic of late. Jose Martinez is batting over .300 with 123 hits, while Marcell Ozuna has recorded a team0best, 129 hits. They’ve got three players closing in on 70 RBI’s, a testament to how well the talent is spread across this team. Miles Mikolas, in his first full-year in the majors, has done a great job of leading the team’s rotation. Bud Norris, in his first year as a closer, has recorded 24 saves, and been impressive.

They will send Austin Gomber for his fifth start (22nd appearance) of the year. In his last two starts, against the Royals and Nationals, he has combined for eleven scoreless innings of work, striking out nine and allowing seven hits. For the year, he has posted a 2.89 ERA in 37 1/3 innings of work. He has struck out 32 batters, while walking 19, and will be looking to keep it going.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Every year, the Dodgers seem to have a new player bursting out as a big-time performer out of nowhere, as well as making a major move at the trade deadline. They brought in one of baseball’s best players last week in Manny Machado, before acquiring Brian Dozier. They also added John Axford as another big-time arm to their bullpen. With the way Matt Kemp has been performing this year, and how Max Muncy has been crushing the ball, these new bats only serve to enhance what they already have. However, they’ve been struggling a lot of late, and this is the time to pick it up. Come on, LA.

They will send Alex Wood to the mound for his 24th start of the season. He has posted a 7-6 record, along with a 3.51 ERA in 128 1/3 innings. He has struck out 113 batters, while walking 31. He allowed one run on three hits over five innings of work in his last start against the Giants.

Cardinals, Gomber, get the win

A good day to be a Cardinals fan, as Austin Gomber goes six strong innings to help lead the team to victory. Matt Carpenter will launch his 34th home run in the game, while Marcell Ozuna adds three more hits to his team-leading total.

The bullpen will close the door before the Dodgers get a chance to make their comeback. The ship is sinking, and they need to reach higher ground.
