Tuesday Night Baseball: Yankees at Astros

The defending world champion Houston Astros host the red hot New York Yankees on Tuesday night.  The game begins at 7:10 pm central. The Yankees are 18-9 on the year, good enough for 2nd place in the American League East division.  Meanwhile, the Astros are 19-10, which is good enough to put them in 1st place in the American League West division. Jordan Montgomery gets the not for New York, while Justin Verlander will toss it for Houston. Houston is favored in this game, at -165

New York Yankees

The story for New York this year has been Didi Gregorious.  Those watching have been impressed, but have been waiting for him to come to earth, which he hasn’t.  Gregorious is hitting a ridiculous .340 on the season, which is a very impressive stat considering we are 27 games into the season.  He has already slugged 10 home runs and driven in 30 RBIs. Most of the time you see a player hitting the ball so aggressively, there are high strikeout numbers, but Gregorious has only struck out 13 times this year while walking 18 times.

While Gregorious has been tearing it up from the left side of the plate, the overshadowed Aaron Judge has been having a good season of his own.  Judge is .317 from the plate on the season. Pitcher Jordan Montgomery is quietly having a good season as well, at 2-0 and having a 3.76 ERA.  Look for Gregorious and Judge to continue their hitting, but the rest of the lineup will need to get on base for this to matter.

Houston Astros

Justin Verlander has been nearly unhittable this year.  He is 4-0 on the season with a miniscule 1.36 ERA.  His meetings with Gregorious should be very interesting, as he has been the best left handed hitter in the game this season.  Something will have to give.

Meanwhile, the usual suspects have been pounding the ball for Houston.  Jose Altuve is going .350 on the season, with Carlos Correa hitting .320.  With his high batting average, Altuve gas also driven in 15 runs.

The Astros get the edge in pitching, due to the great start Verlander has jumped out to, combined with the high strikeout rates from the Yankees.  The highly touted Giancarlo Stanton has struck out 40 times already and Judge has been punched out 39 times. They will have to step up their plate discipline in order to succeed in this game.

Astros Top Yankees

Aside from Didi Gregorious’s monster season, the Yankees’ top hitters have not shown great plate discipline.  With the high strikeout numbers from Judge and Stanton, look for Verlander to get aggressively ahead in the count against these two hitters specifically.  This fact combined with the fast start that Houston’s offense has gotten off to would seem to spell trouble for New York. A great outing from Jordan Montgomery (Which is entirely possible) would certainly put this game into reach for New York, but I would hedge my bets toward Houston.  Take the Houston Astros at -165.
