Sunday Night Football: Bears/Packers

One of the oldest, most storied rivalries in the history of sports will be renewed on Sunday when the Chicago Bears visit Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. For years, this has been a mismatch within the NFC North division. Since their 2011 NFC Championship clash that saw the Packers win on the last minute pick-6 by lineman B.J. Raji, Green Bay has won all but 2 of the meetings between the two teams. Green Bay is favored in this matchup by 7.5 points.

Chicago Bears

Bears have done a major re-tool this past off-season. This game will serve as the head coaching debut for Bears’ coach Matt Nagy. They added star receiver Allen Robinson and tight and Trey Burton to go with sophomore quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Also, in perhaps the biggest move of the off-season, they acquired defensive anchor Khalil Mack, not to mention dynamic first-round linebacker Roquan Smith. They will have the advantage of not being a scoutable team. They may not have the firepower to win this game, but it should be a good, close matchup this year.

While referring to their prediction of this game, CBSSports had this to say about the Chicago offense:

“The model has factored in Mitchell Trubisky’s development as Bears quarterback. In 12 games, the North Carolina rookie threw only seven touchdown passes against seven interceptions. With a season under his belt, the computer is expecting him to broaden the team’s offensive scope. Assisting in that cause will be top receiver Allen Robinson, the former Jaguar who joined in the offseason”

Green Bay Packers

Green Bay still has their most valuable asset: arguably the best quarterback in the world in Aaron Rodgers. However, he will be without his former go-to star wideout Jordy Nelson, which will take some adjusting. Green Bay did add a weapon to their roster in tight end Jimmy Graham. Look for him to target Graham and Davante Adams a lot during this contest.

The Green Bay running game will need to step up in this game. According to CBSSports.com:

“Manning the running back slots are Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery. Williams was a pleasant surprise during the second half of the season, rushing for 522 yards in his final eight games. Montgomery, who’s also a pass-catching threat, is good to go after wrist surgery.”

It won’t be a surprise to anyone to see a great game from Rodgers. According to CBSSports.com:

“The model is aware that in order for the Packers to cover, they will need Aaron Rodgers to get production out of a high-powered offense capable of quick-strike scoring. The 34-year-old, two-time MVP played in only seven games last season after fracturing his collarbone in Week 6 against the Vikings”.

Bears Surprise Packers

If the Packers were favored by less, perhaps by a field goal, I would probably swing the other way. However, the Bear offense has improved enough that they should be able to cover the spread.
