Scherzer Traded to Rangers Adds to Flurry of Major League Baseball Trade Deadline
With the Major League Baseball trade deadline Tuesday Evening, teams are starting to make their moves, whether it’s to unload players from a team that is struggling or add players for a team that feels they are going to contend down the stretch.
Big Time Deal
Saturday night, the biggest move went down. Max Scherzer was traded from the New York Mets to the Texas Rangers. The 39-year-old has 210 career wins and a 3.15 earned run average. This season, Max is 9-4 on the season and has a 4.01 earned run average in 19 starts.
The Mets have been one of the most disappointing teams in all of Major League Baseball, fourth place in the National League East. Scherzer also opted into his option for $43M to pitch for the Rangers in the 2024 season as well.
On the other side, one of the prized prospects that came over to the New York Mets was Luisangel Acuna, brother of Braves slugger Robert Acuna Jr.
Contenders Get Better
The move makes a ton of sense for the Texas Rangers. Bruce Bochy and his team have been way ahead of schedule this season, leading the American League West. Texas started Saturday with a two-game lead in the division. The Rangers have been one of the best-hitting teams in all of Major League Baseball but would love to improve upon their ERA, which ranks 16th in the league.
The starting pitching, though, for the Rangers has been pretty solid, with the most wins and the fourth-best team ERA. This is despite not having Jacob DeGrom this season.
The Mets started their fire sale of trades by sending their closer, David Robertson, over to the Miami Marlins. This was an all-National League East trade, and one would have been shocked by at the beginning of the season. The Mets are selling, and the Marlins are buying!
Other Moves
Earlier this week, the Chicago White Sox were the big sellers sending Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to the Los Angeles Angels. The White Sox are 20 games under .500, and the Angels feel they are buyers now. The Angels announced they would be keeping Shohei Ohtani but have since lost back-to-back games to the Blue Jays.
Then – the Chicago White Sox eliminated both Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly from their roster. Both those guys went to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Trayce Thompson was one of the pieces that went from Los Angeles to Chicago. Finally, the White Sox sent reliever Kendall Gravemen to the Houston Astros. That became five pitchers in a two-day span to leave the White Sox.
Carlos Santana, a great bat off the bench and a possible starter, was shipped from the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates to the Milwaukee Brewers. This was an all-National League Central trade. The Pirates are battling with St. Louis for last place, while the Brewers are one of the worst offensive teams in the league, despite leading the division.
The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up Enrique Hernandez from the Red Sox earlier in the week as well. Hernandez used to be with the Dodgers.
The trade deadline is Tuesday, August 1st, at 6 pm ET. All trades must be through to the league office by that time.
