A pair of Western Conference foes will square off Friday in Los Angeles. It’s the San Antonio Spurs taking on the Lakers. The Spurs have had a miserable 2023-2024 season. They went to the All Star Game as the worst team in the West, with just 11 wins.
San Antonio lost eight of their last ten games before the break, including a 23 point loss at Dallas. The Spurs also lost last night at the Kings.
The Lakers went 7-3 over their final 10 games before the break. But, last night was not a good start to the second half, as they were smoked in Golden State. The Lakers are 30-27 overall, and sit 9th in the West.
The Lakers are -9.5 in this game over the Spurs.
Rough Season in San Antonio
San Antonio is not going to make the playoffs. While they have 25+ games remaining, the reality is there for the last place Spurs. But, with young talent, they will look to close the books on the season on a high note. The Spurs will also be in line for one of the top picks in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The 2023 NBA Draft saw them draft big man Victor Wembanyama. He has had a nice rookie season, scoring more than 20 points per game, and rip down 10 rebounds. The Spurs are also getting good offensive production from Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson. They are combining for 35 points per game.
The Spurs are on the road for two more games after this. They will visit Utah on Sunday and Minnesota on Tuesday. The final game in February is at home against Oklahoma City. When March arrives, the Spurs host the Pacers to start it out.
LeBron James still doing amazing things
While LeBron James sat in his first game back from the break, he still has played in 49 games out of 57 for the Lakers this season. James is second to Anthony Davis in scoring. Davis is at 24.9 per game, while James is at 24.8. James is the top rebounder on the team with 7.8 per game.
The Lakers as a team are scoring 117 points per game. That ranks 13th in the NBA. The Lakers are one of the best shooting teams in the league, making over 49% of their shots. The Lakers have struggled from downtown though, as they are 27th, with 11.4 per game.
Los Angeles will go on the road for back to back games following this one. The Lakers are at the Suns on Sunday and Clippers on the 28th. The next day, they will be back home to host the Wizards. The Lakers start March with five home games against Denver, Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Milwaukee and Minnesota.
Lakers Top Spurs
The Lakers know they need to win games like this. Look for the Lakers to get right and healthy with a win at home here. The Spurs are young and full of energy, but just not overly talented as a basketball team. If the Lakers come out with a little urgency, they should win this game.
