PGA: 3M Open Betting Preview

Viktor Hovland Wins BMW Championship

After the Open Championship. Many of the best golfers in the world will head to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and take part in the 3M Open. This is just the fifth season for the event. Last season Tony Finau was the winner as he topped Emiliano Grillo and Im Sung-Jae by three strokes. Previous winners were Cameron Champ, Michael Thompson, and Matthew Wolff. Wolff’s win in 2019 was over Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa by a single stroke. This will be played at TPC Twin Cities. The course is a par 71, that spans more than 7,400 yards. The total purse for this event is $7.8M, with the winner taking home $1.4M. Let’s take a look at some of the contenders for the event:

Tony Finau +1200

Finau can not be pleased with his recent form. After a bad performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which saw him fail to make the cut, many projected he would fire back and be better at the Open. Tony was not better. He finished 92nd and did not reach to Saturday. Finau has struggled since his win in late April in Mexico. His best finish during that time was 23rd place at Wells Fargo. Finau was poor at striking the ball, as he was 139th in strokes gained tee to green at the Rocket Mortgage. It was much of the same at the Open. Despite the struggles, he’s the favorite for this event.

Cameron Young +1400

Probably playing the best golf of anyone in the field right now. After finishing 6th at the John Deere Classic, he came back with another Top 10 at the Open. Young went back-to-back days of 68 and 66 at the Open, and his 73 on the final day put him out of contention, despite playing in the final pairing. Young is battling for a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team, so his motivation to play well is strong. If he can figure it out around the green this weekend, he will have a good shot.

Hideki Matsuyama +1800

Hideki has made the cut in 9 out of his last 10 events. The lone event was at the Arnold Palmer back in March. Despite making the cut, he has not had at Top 10 finish since March at the Players. Hideki did fare well at the Open, with his 13th place finish. Much of his success this season has been SG: Approach and Greens in regulation. He will be in search of his 4th Top 10 this season when he gets to Minneapolis.

Justin Thomas +2000

Talk about struggles. The trip overseas was not kind of Justin Thomas. Although, making the weekend at the Scottish Open could have been considered a success after 135th at the Rocket Mortgage the previous event. At the Open, Justin shot an 82 on the first day to put him out of contention right away. Thomas is playing some of the worst golf of his career, and fallen to 75th in the FedEx Cup standings. He is desperate for a bounce back in Minneapolis this weekend.

Sungjae Im +2200

Im has been a Top 10 magnet this season. He has seen 7 Top 10 finishes and made the cut in all but 5 events all season. After missing the cut at the Scottish Open, he finished 20th at the Open Championship. Most of Im’s Top 10 success came in the spring, where he finished 6th, 16th, 7th, and 8th in four straight events. Im will look to get his putter going when he takes the course on Thursday.

Emilano Grillo +3000

Grillo had kind of an underlooked performance at the Open. He started off the event with a 66, but then went back with a 74 on Day 2. His final two days of 70 and 68 put him in the Top 10 for the tournament. Grillo needed it, as he had missed the cut at the John Deere Classic. Grillo has a win this season, which came in May at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
