NL West Baseball: Giants (56-56) vs. DBacks (62-50)

Even years had been the secret ingredient to being World Series champions for the Giants from 2010-2014, but the magic has since worn off. They reached the postseason in 2016 but lost early, and this year they are still hovering around .500, with just 50 games left.

The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, are looking to make their second straight playoff appearance. They’ve been sharp of late, and still have control of the division, just ahead of the Dodgers at this point.

San Francisco Giants

The issue with the Giants is the same now, as it has been all year. Despite all of the big-name players on their offense, they don’t even have a player with 50 RBI’s, and we’re near the end of the first week of August. They’ve been outscored by 30 runs, and Andrew McCutchen is leading the team with just 46 runs batted in. Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford have been decent, each around 45 RBI’s, but nothing special for the Giants. Their young new left-fielder, Austin Slater, has been a bright spot for them, driving in 10 runs, with 22 hits in his first 69 at bats (.319 BA) this year.

Derek Holland will be making the mound for the Giants tonight for his 25th appearance (21st start). In 113 innings of work, he has posted a 3.90 ERA, striking out 114 batters and walking 41. He pitched five innings in his last start against the Padres, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five. He has not earned a win since June 20th.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks have been playing very consistently over the past few weeks as they try to hold off the newly reshaped Dodgers team. Led by David Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt, the offense has been raking of late, outscoring all of their opponents big-time. Nick Ahmed has been showing signs of power in recent games, helping the team to drive in more runs. Clay Buchholz has done a great job for this team since signing on, as his pitching ability has done wonders for their rotation.

The DBacks will send Robbie Ray to the mound for his fourteenth start of the season. He has not been the same this year, as he’s battled through injuries. Ray has posted a 5.05 ERA in 66 innings of work, striking out 87 batters while walking 33. He had 218 strikeouts each of the past two years. He allowed four runs on two hits over five and a third innings of work against the Rangers in his last start.

Giants get the W, move back over .500

Not ready to give up just yet, the Giants are still out here fighting, as they end their series with the Diamondbacks with a victory.

Led by the strong performance of Derek Holland, his six-solid innings tonight, the Giants will get it done. Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen will both go yard to help power the offense.
