A lot is going on around the NFL these days, although not much of it is actually football related. Nevertheless, it’s important to catch up on everything you might have missed over the holiday weekend.
After years of resisting a new name, the Washington Redskins are suddenly rushing to find one. The team has quickly moved from “reviewing” their current name, to having owner Dan Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera trying to pick a new one. In fact, Rivera says it would be “awesome” if the franchise could have a new name picked out and in place by the start of the season.
Rivera also says that he and Snyder have kicked around some possible names and that he’s a big fan of at least two of them. The team isn’t publicly disclosing the options, although quarterback Dwayne Haskins mentioned on Twitter that he likes the Redtails. There’s a good chance that the new name won’t require the franchise to alter its color scheme, although this appears to be happening and could happen soon.
Get Me Out of Here
Speaking of the Washington franchise, there appears to be another crisis facing Snyder. According to reports, three minority owners of the franchise are looking to sell their share of the team.
Robert Rothman, Dwight Schar, and Frederick W. Smith are all looking for buyers because they are “not happy being a partner” with Snyder. Together, the trio owns roughly 40% of the franchise, with Snyder holding the controlling interest. Snyder was reportedly stunned by the sudden mass exodus of his minority owners.
Is Time Running Out?
Over the weekend, Packers CEO Mark Murphy stated the obvious by commenting that time is running out in regards to the NFL dealing with the ongoing pandemic. Murphy says the NFL had the benefit of time when the pandemic hit. However, the pandemic isn’t going away with training camp starting in less than a month.
The league has yet to set parameters on training camp or the preseason. They also have a lot to work out with the players’ union. Murphy says that “the Packers will have to make several difficult decisions in the coming weeks” with time starting to become an enemy for the NFL.
A Waiting Game
While Green Bay’s CEO mentioned the elephant in the room, NFL coaches and GMs are sitting on their hands. Some coaches and GMs have anonymously spoken up about the lack of communication from the league.
They figure that training camp activities will have to be altered by safety protocols. However, coaches and GMs have no idea what those protocols will be, making it difficult for them to be prepared.
Bye, Cleveland
In actual football news, Browns tight end David Njoku has asked the team for a trade. Njoku’s agent Drew Rosenhaus says it’s in his best interest to find a new team, although the Browns say they would like to keep him.
Cleveland picked up Njoku’s fifth-year option, although that was after signing free-agent tight end Austin Hooper to a four-year deal. Cleveland’s scheme under new coach Kevin Stefanski could utilize multiple tight ends, creating plenty of playing time for both Hooper and Njoku.
Nevertheless, Njoku appears to be looking for a fresh start after an injury-plagued 2019 season.
