NFL Gambling Suspensions Coming

The last few days have been relatively quiet when looking for news from the NFL, but that’s not going to be the case by the end of the week. According to league sources, suspensions stemming from illegal sports betting are going to be coming out by the end of the week.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers is set to receive a season-long suspension from the league, and he has already apologized for his mistakes. Now we have learned that there are going to be other players that are set to be suspended, and it is expected to be a year.

Rodgers appeared to have wagered on Indianapolis Colts games last year, and that’s a direct violation of the league’s gambling policy. At this time it’s not known who else is facing a suspension, but the league uncovered other names while doing an investigation on Rodgers.

Along with handing out suspensions, the league is going to be sending out memos to teams to remind them of the gambling policy. Rookies are now going to be required to take mandatory anti-gambling sessions after being drafted.

This isn’t the first sport to face some gambling issues, but there has been a rash of this kind of action in the NFL over the past year. The NFL has partnered with sports betting operators as a way to generate revenue, but it’s always been clear that betting on sports was not allowed for players.

Gambling Rules Are Clear

The NFL has some very specific and clear anti-gambling laws, and there are some forms of betting that are actually allowed. In order to make things more clear, the league is going to focus on six key rules in an attempt to keep this from happening again.

The first rule that the league is going to enforce is the biggest, and it’s that betting on the NFL is not allowed. Players are also not allowed to do any form of gambling at the team facility, or while they are in a hotel when traveling for a road game.

Players also aren’t allowed to have someone else bet for them, and that appears to have been the case with the Rodgers situation. NFL players are also not allowed to share inside information to others that are betting in the industry.

Even entering a sportsbook during the NFL playing season is outlawed, and specific dates are going to be outlined. Finally, NFL players are not allowed to participate in daily fantasy football of any kind either.

Not the First Time

Rodgers is not the first player to receive a year-long suspension from the NFL for gambling on the league as last year Calvin Ridley earned a season-long suspension. Ridley was a member of the Atlanta Falcons at the time, and was wagering on his own team’s games.

Earlier this offseason, the league suspended four members of the Detroit Lions for betting on the NFL, as well as a member of the Washington Commanders. Detroit released three of the players that were suspended, while wide receiver Jameson Williams will miss the first six games of the 2023 season.
