NFC South Rivalry: New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons

The magic of the 2017 team was defense for the Saints, and that seems to have completely disappeared for them this season. They really can’t help but give up big plays.

On the other side, the Falcons bounced back nicely last week against Carolina, following an opening night loss to the defending champions. The Atlanta Falcons are -2 in this game.

New Orleans Saints

While the offense has been coming into its own, the Saints still have a lot to improve. Alvin Kamara is averaging just 3.6 yards per carry, and outside of him, Ted Ginn, and Michael Thomas, not one receiver on the team has very many targets. Brees needs to start spacing it out so they can’t double on Thomas. Demario Davis is leading the defense, which almost allowed for a loss to Tyrod’s Browns, following giving up 48 points to the Buccaneers.

This is going to have to be an area of significant improvement, and soon for the Saints. Their offense alone cannot get them back into the postseason.

In order to down their division rivals, they need to start strong. With no touchdowns in the first three-quarters last week, they did not give themselves much of a chance. Drew Brees needs to start slinging it to Ginn and Thomas from the start of drive one, and they need to get pressure on Matt Ryan. This is not a team that will record too many sacks, but if you can put him under pressure, it will lead to turnovers, and better field position.

Atlanta Falcons

While Devonta Freeman is resting his injury, Tevin Coleman has a great chance to prove he can be the top back. He averaging five yards per carry so far and has done well to show how best stuff. As good as Julio Jones has been this year (233 yards in two weeks), he has not gotten much help or consistency from some of his teammates this season, something that has to happen. Matt Ryan, like Drew Brees, will really need to spread things out and put pressure on the defense to make plays on multiple guys and not just one.

To take down New Orleans, Atlanta needs to play solid defense early. If Ryan can get going and find his top targets early on, it will serve to make things a whole lot easier. This is a talented offense, and a solid defense, that can easily pull out a win. Ryan needs a big day as well because you better believe that Brees came to play in this road game.

Saints win in Atlanta, go to 2-1

A good day for the Saints is ahead, as Brees and company will come out victorious. 350 yards and three touchdowns from DB should help to do the trick for the Saints.

Matt Ryan will just not have enough today, and the inconsistency of other receivers will ultimately cost them dearly.
