The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies will complete a doubleheader on Saturday night with a nationally televised game. The Mets are slight favorites in the nightcap with a moneyline of -120 compared to Philadelphia’s moneyline of +100. There is also an over/under of 8.5 runs.
The Mets took the series opener from the Phillies on Friday, bouncing back after a rare series loss against the Braves earlier this week. With the win, the Mets retained a 3.5-game lead at the top of the NL East. They also have the second-best record in the National League, putting them in a good position heading down the stretch.
Meanwhile, the Phillies are relying on one of the three Wild Card spots to get them to October. Despite a hot stretch during the month of August, Philly is 11 games back in the division, although the Phils are holding onto the second Wild Card spot in the NL. However, they’ve cooled down lately, losing five of their last eight games.
Who’s At Falt?
Bailey Falter will get the primetime start for the Phillies on Saturday night. The young lefty has made seven starts and four relief appearances this season, going 0-3 with a 4.85 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.
Falter has been in the minors since late July, so this is a big opportunity for him, although he’s been outstanding at triple-A this season.
However, Falter may not get much run support, as Philly’s lineup has been missing in action lately. Outside of an 11-run outburst against the Reds earlier this week, the Phillies have scored two runs or less in six of their last seven games, including three shutouts.
While Nick Castellanos and Rhys Hoskins are swinging hot bats, the Phillies are struggling to get consistent production from all parts of their lineup.
Peter Up
The Mets are also recalling a lefty from the minors for Saturday’s nightcap, as David Peterson will get the start. In 14 starts and four relief appearances this year, Peterson is 6-2 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Peterson’s last start in the majors was on August 6, when he gave the Mets 5.1 scoreless innings against the Braves.
Of course, the Mets have been a little erratic offensively lately. Despite a few promising outbursts lately, they’ve scored two runs or less in five of their last eight games.
On the bright side, the Mets have three all-stars, although Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and others have slumped lately with Jeff McNeil and Mark Canha trying to keep the New York lineup afloat.
How Do You Like the Big Apple?
It may not seem like it, but the Mets have a considerable advantage when it comes to starting pitching, as Peterson owns a 3.17 ERA as a starter, with the Mets going 10-4 in his 14 starts.
