The NFC East had just one team come away with a win in the opening week, so, in a way, it is similar to how last year began. This year, there will again be at least one 0-2 team, as the New York Giants and Washington Football Team get together for a matchup in primetime on Thursday night.
Unfortunately for WFT, they have already lost new starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for 6-8 weeks, leaving them to use the next man up. Taylor Heinicke will need to step into the starting role. He played very well against Tampa Bay in the playoffs, and he’ll have an opportunity to now build off of that strong performance. And if he’s able to hold his own and guide the team to wins, he could keep the role even once Fitzpatrick is healthy.
On the other side, Daniel Jones is playing to try and keep his job for the future. Nobody has publicly stated from anywhere within the organization that they have considered a switch. But the New York Jets had a better quarterback in Sam Darnold and opted to move on after the three years. So, if Jones does not deliver at all in 2021, he could find himself in a new home, or as a backup.
Odds and Lines
The spread for the game is set at WFT -3.5. The over/under is sitting at 40.5 points. The WFT moneyline is -175, and the NYG moneyline is +150.
Giants Seeking First Win
The Giants felt that they had a chance to make the playoffs last year in Week 17 before the Eagles imploded in the final game. But now in a new campaign, New York was manhandled by a hungry Broncos team and lost 27-13. And with every game the team loses, the whispers around Jones grow a bit louder.
This is a game New York has to see as a must-win. Starting 0-2 following a disappointing 2020 campaign would be less than ideal. The Giants have struggled to get it out of the mud, while Saquon Barkley had an extremely quiet return to the lineup. They have to be better across the board.
If the Giants can limit their turnovers and pressure Heinicke, they may be able to leave D.C. with a win.
WFT Looking to Break Even
Nobody likes starting the year 0-1, but 0-2 is much worse. The first game of the year is always the most unpredictable, whereas a team’s true colors slowly start to come out over the second. And with Fitzpatrick out for an extended period, it’s Heinicke time once again.
Antonio Gibson is one of the only silver linings from a Week 1 loss to the Chargers. He carried 20 times for 90 yards, averaging more than four yards per carry. However, none of the receivers had a big day. They hardly used J.D. McKissic after he had a significant role for most of last season, and with Curtis Samuel sidelined, McKissic’s lack of touches was surprising.
The underlying strength of the WFT is its defense. They have an incredible pass-rush and defensive line. They need to make life miserable for the Giants all night. They are more than capable.
And the Winner Is…
The Giants will lose on the road as Washington’s D eats them alive. Trust WFT to shake off the Week 1 loss and get back in the win column.
