If the 2020-2021 season will be truncated, there is talk than an expanded NCAA tournament field will happen. This would generally be a bad idea, as there are already plenty of teams in the tournament field. But, if the season is to be conference only, with an early start in January, how would we know who the strong mid-majors are?
The season is going to be odd anyway, so why not go to 96 teams and give mid-majors a shot at knocking off some of the big boys.
The argument can be made that both the regular season and conference tournament champions should get to go to the tournament. If it happens to be the same team, the team that finished second in the regular-season standings gets to go to the tournament, too.
The rest of the tournament becomes all of the at-large teams. Sure, it makes some nightmare scenarios for seeding and keeping conference opponents away from each other, but who cares. The more, the merrier!
Golden Eagles Bring Home the Title
The Basketball Tournament was exciting from start to finish. Watching some of our favorite NCAA alums battle for $1 million gave some sense of normalcy.
Ultimately, the Marquette alumni defeated Sideline Cancer and took home the $1 million prize. They had to defeat another alumni team, Dayton, to reach the finals.
38-year-old Travis Diener, who was golfing when he found out his teammates had signed him up, hit the tournament winning shot. Diener’s game-winning shot was the only one he had hit all game.
More importantly, The Basketball Tournament gave us hope that a bubble will work, and we might see NCAA basketball back at some point. While a bubble won’t work as well with college athletes, the concept will be similar.
Transfer Season Coming to a Close
Transfer season is almost over, but a few players are still waiting to make their decision on the NBA draft. Which teams struck gold in the transfer market and which ones came up empty?
Eric Musselman has continued his success in hitting the transfer market in Nevada to his job at Arkansas. Justin Smith started almost every game for Indiana and add in to the mix Jalen Tate, who was a stud at Northern Kentucky, and you have two immediate difference makers.
Texas Tech also did well, adding the most exciting player on the transfer market in Mac McClung. How McClung fits Beard’s defense-first system remains to be seen. Marcus Santos-Silva, transfer from VCU, should also be immediately eligible.
A Big 12 counterpart in Kansas State saw more talent leave than come in. They lost Cartier Diarra, along with five other players. It is going to be a long season for Bruce Weber.
Illinois has the most to gain with players deciding to come back from the NBA draft. If Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn both pull their name out of the draft, the Illini could be one of the favorites to reach the Final Four.
