NBA News: Projecting The Major Award Winners

Though it is unclear at this point when the NBA season might return, one thing we know for a fact is that the regular season is basically finished. And as such, the award decisions were all but made. Because with a month left in the season, not much was going to change.

Read below for our predictions of the winners of each major award for the 2019-20 NBA season.

Rookie of the Year: Ja Morant (Grizzlies)

Despite the strong play of Zion Williamson to close out the season, Ja’s work with the Grizzlies is more than enough to get him the award. He has been playing the entire year and posting some quality numbers.

He has proven himself as a guy who can consistently score when the team needs it just like at Murray State while serving as a fantastic floor leader. Making the playoffs gives you no real edge (Come on, Kendrick Nunn …), but it does aid his already strong case.

Most Valuable Player: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks)

He is competing with LeBron James for this, but should ultimately end up being awarded with another MVP trophy. The numbers he has averaged, the 30 points and 14 rebounds per game, combined with solid assist numbers and just 29 minutes of court time a night are enough.

He is a tremendous talent that just keeps getting better every season. LeBron is posting career-highs across the board, but it will not be enough to get enough votes to oust the Greek Freak. He’ll just get the edge.

Sixth Man of the Year: Montrezl Harrell (Clippers)

They may as well call it the Sixth Clipper award at this point. Lou Williams has won it the past few years, and just because of that, Montrezl will get it this time. He has been marvelous off their bench this season, to the point he could earn a monster contract somewhere next year.

He may be heading to a new team, but no matter where he is, he will produce. He scores at will around the hoop and is a tenacious rebounder. His numbers are good enough for him to win the award.

Coach of the Year: Mike Budenholzer (Bucks)

This is the hardest award of all to decide on, and he may ultimately end up coming in third because the team that goes 53-12 after a 60-win campaign may not garner enough attention for the job he did differently.

Nick Nurse took a banged up, new-look Raptors team to the second-best record in the conference. The Lakers are 49-14 under Frank Vogel. And Oklahoma City has been unbelievable despite a seismic roster shift from last season under Billy Donovan.

Perhaps if the teams end up playing five or six more regular-season games, a few of these could be subject to change. It is extremely unlikely that much changes, considering that the postseason does not have an effect since they are voted on before then.

It will be fun to get basketball back whenever that day may be. It is just not the same without the NBA.
