It was no longer a secret that Philadelphia 76ers swingman Shake Milton was capable of big production for his team after he finally got a chance to start some ballgames this year. He was regularly contributing big points and playing solidly on the defensive end. On a team with several shooting guards, he was standing out.
Milton only appeared in 20 games during his rookie season, but it’s clear his game developed as he learned from the guys in front of him. His breakout performances on national TV this season also helped to spread his name through the league.
Milton was a fantastic shooter and playmaker during his three years at Southern Methodist. He was able to score when he needed to, plus averaged five rebounds and four assists per game. He is the kind of guy who can get you what you need, as you need it.
According to multiple 76ers beat writers, Milton (11 starts this year) could join the starting lineup on a full-time basis for the postseason. The lineup of Ben Simmons-Milton-Josh Richardson-Tobias Harris-Joel Embiid has played zero minutes together because of various injuries, but Derek Bodner and Mike O’Connor both said they could foresee it happening.
Solid Numbers
If you look at Milton’s numbers per-36 minutes, he’s averaging 18-4-4, proving his ability to make shots. He’s also shooting nearly 50% from the field and 45% from deep this year. On a team that has a sharpshooter in Furkan Korkmaz, it’s nice to have another budding star in Milton.
Milton is a guy that had very little expectations from a team expected to contend coming into the season. But he came in and got the job done for his guys.
He also served as a solid fantasy flex option for many in need of a big signing. He is still only beginning to scratch the surface, and his numbers should be expected to improve with more opportunity.
On a team with Embiid and Simmons leading and Harris serving as the third-leading scorer, having a sharpshooter can really open up the floor. It is no surprise that Simmons struggles to shoot, so with the likes of Milton out there, catch-and-shoot baskets will be readily available.
Missed Opportunity
The Dallas Mavericks, who have gotten a lot of inconsistent guard play aside from Luka Doncic this year, must be regretting their decision right now. They took Milton No. 54 overall in the 2018 draft before trading him. Oh, how he could have been a good addition for them in 2019-20.
After being the No. 89 recruit in the class of 2015, it’s clear that Milton is proving many people wrong about how good he was capable of being. He’s proven himself as an occasional flamethrower from deep now and a guy who can keep the 76ers in close games.
In addition to Korkmaz, the 76ers have Matisse Thybulle, Alec Burks, and Glenn Robinson III competing for guard minutes, and yet here came Milton. Look for him to continue to perform whenever the 76ers take the court again. And he’d blend right into the starting five.
