Generally speaking, the quality of work is usually better than the quantity of it. But in this case of H-O-R-S-E, it seems that flip phone quality footage is what we’re back to seeing. Mark Jones emceed the event and four matchups that took place. But man, was the video lacking in perception. It was a bit difficult to see, but still, it was better than nothing.
The first matchup featured NBA star Trae Young and former All-Star and NBA champion Chauncey Billups. It was a good start for Young as expected, but he quickly fell behind and could not make up the deficit.
Billups was known for his ability to score in the clutch during his playing days, and it’s clear that he has still got it. His trash talk game was on point. He hit all of the big shots he needed to eliminate Trae, and now he’s booked his way into the semis.
The next one featured Hall-of-Famer-to-be Tamika Catchings and Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley. Conley had an advantage as the only player with an indoor gym of the eight competitors, so there is no weather impact.
He was knocking shots down all over the place and hit a behind-the-backboard lay-up to close out what was an easy win. Catchings did not bring her A-game, B-Game, or even C-game. She never got going, giving her opponent but an H before bowing out.
The third matchup featured the only shutout of the day. It was shocking and also not surprising at the same time. Bulls star Zach LaVine took on Celtics legend Paul Pierce.
LaVine is a scoring machine with extreme athleticism. Pierce was always known for his shot-making, which deserted him this time. He made only five shots all game. He had a cool scooter shot planned at the end, but LaVine never let him get to it by sinking all his attempts. Zach was on fire all game, giving him an easy win.
The final opening-round matchup featured Oklahoma City All-Star Chris Paul and Chicago Sky All-Star Allie Quigley. Quigley was swishing shots from all over the yard, proving tough to beat.
And Paul is known for being shifty and hitting off-balance shots and is a mid-range master. So, he matched several of Quigley’s looks. He made some tough ones, too, but ultimately took the loss. Quigley played very well in what was the most enjoyable matchup of this opening round.
Not The Best Look
Going back to the footage quality, it was something to behold that in 2020 it was as grainy and slow as it was. The picture was a bit hard to see at times, but still, there was an effective replay system and Jones running it. So it could have been much worse.
The semifinals and subsequent final matchup will take place Thursday on ESPN, beginning at 9 pm ET.
An inner-Chicago battle will pit Zach LaVine and Allie Quigley, while the other will have Chauncey Billups against Mike Conley. It should be fun.
