National League West Affair: Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants

The Colorado Rockies visit the San Francisco Giants on Friday night.  The contest starts at 9:05 pm central. Colorado is 24-20 on the year, good enough for second place in the National League West division.  San Francisco has earned the third place spot in the same division with their 22-23 record. Kyle Freeland takes the hill for the Rockies.  Freeland is 3-4 on the season, and owns an ERA of 3.42.  For the Giants, Derek Holland will get the starting nod.  Holland’s record is 2-4, and he has a 4.79 ERA.  Both teams will be looking for a boost to their decent records.  Colorado is favored in this matchup: at -120.

Colorado Rockies

Looking at the stats for Colorado, it’s no surprise to see who sits at the top.  Nolan Arenado is leading the team in hitting.  Arenado is hitting a respectable .319 for the team he’s expected to lead for years to come.  He also gets on base during 41% of his at-bats. Also, 57% of his hits are extra base hits, which gets him into scoring position a lot.  This leads to him crossing the plate a lot, shown by his 22 runs scored. This immense slugging percentage has also led to him driving in 23 runs.  It’s safe to say that there is a good chance Arenado could have a hand in deciding this game.

Including Arenado, 7 players for Colorado are batting .250 or above.  One of these players who could have quite an impact on this game is David Dahl, who hasn’t had big stats in his 20 games, but has a good .293 average, with a .500 slugging average.

San Francisco Giants

San Francisco has come a long way from last season, where they were competing for the #1 draft pick, to now where they sit in third place.  Brandon Belt has been a big part of this turnaround.  Belt has hit with some great power this season, with nearly 60% of his hits being extra base hits.  He also has 10 homeruns to go with his other 11 extra base hits. He will certainly be a factor in this game, as neither starting pitcher has had a great season, look for the offenses to decide this one.  Buster Posey could also be a big factor, as he has hit .301, while driving in 15 runs.  Barring a breakout performance from either pitcher, I would expect a high scoring game.

Rockies Outslug Giants

Nolan Arenado has had a great season, as he had become expected to, and I don’t see him stopping any time soon.  Just taking into account his stats, he is poised to have at least one hit, and it is fairly likely to be a home run.  If the Rockies are able to get men on base, which I believe they will, they will be tough to top. He also gets on base a lot, so if other guys are swinging the bat well, look for Arenado to cross the plate a few times as well.  Take Colorado at -120.
