Jacksonville Jaguars at New Orleans Saints Betting Preview

Two teams with intriguing quarterback situations will clash in the second week of the preseason when the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the New Orleans Saints in the Caesars Superdome. Jacksonville will look to see progress from number one overall pick Trevor Lawrence, while the Saints will simply look to keep getting reps for their top players while evaluating their lesser talent.

Regardless of who wins, there should be a lot to learn about each team in this contest.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence completed six of his nine pass attempts in his first professional football outing in the Jaguars’ first preseason contest. But he did take two sacks against the Cleveland Browns, fumbling the ball on one of those hits, which is something that the Jags will look to prevent in New Orleans. But Lawrence is one of four quarterbacks who saw the field for the Jaguars in that game, as Jacksonville looks to solidify its entire quarterback room this preseason.

Along with Lawrence, Jake Luton, Gardner Minshew, and CJ Beathard all saw action for the Jaguars. Lawrence is the clear number one quarterback of the future on this team, but deciding who gets the second and third spots on this roster will go a long way in shaping not just the depth at that position but also the development of Lawrence as he will learn from those two more experienced voices.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints lost their preseason opener in a 17-14 game against the Baltimore Ravens. They gave snaps to three quarterbacks in that game, with Taysom Hill, Jameis Winston, and Ian Book all seeing action in the losing effort. And with all three New Orleans quarterbacks throwing interceptions in the first preseason game, the starting job in New Orleans could still be won by anyone able to play consistently well over the next two weeks.

Outside of the quarterback position, running back is a position worth watching for the Saints. Alvin Kamara is the clear number one here, but the Saints also have Latavius Murray and Devonta Freeman on their current roster. But with Troy Jones Jr. rushing for 82 yards on just seven carries in the Saints’ preseason opener, the depth chart at running back may not be set in stone just yet.

Just like ball security at the quarterback position was an issue for the Saints last week, the same could be said about the Saints’ running backs. Jones, Murray, and Freeman all lost a fumble in their loss to the Ravens, something the Saints won’t be able to afford when the games count.

Jacksonville Jaguars at New Orleans Saints Betting Pick

Any time a total is hung in the 40s in the NFL preseason, it is worth taking a shot at the under. The late-game offenses from teams in the preseason are nothing short of abysmal, and that should be the case in this battle of teams who are mostly set at the quarterback and skill positions. Expect this game to slow to a crawl late and for the under to come in.
