Giants vs Dodgers Betting Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a chance to pull even with the San Francisco Giants atop the NL West if they can beat their longtime rivals on Wednesday night. The two teams have split the first two games of their four-game series, although the Dodgers are considerably -170 favorites for Wednesday’s game. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s moneyline is listed at +145.

Despite Tuesday’s loss to the Dodgers, the Giants continue to hold onto the top spot in the NL West. But after heading into the all-star break on a four-game winning streak, San Francisco is just 2-3 since the break, dropping the club’s lead to a single game. In fact, the Giants are only ahead of LA in the loss column, as both teams are tied with a league-high 59 wins.

The Dodgers will try to be the first team to reach 60 wins on Wednesday. If Los Angeles can do that, it will create a tie atop the NL West between the two teams ahead of Thursday’s series finale. Going back before the all-star break, the Dodgers have now won six of their last nine games and have been picking up momentum over the last few weeks.

All He Does Is Win

The Dodgers hope to keep up that momentum on Wednesday with help from Julio Urias, who has been the team’s good-luck charm this year. In his 19 starts in 2021, Urias has won 12 games, doubling the number of wins he collected during his first five years in the majors. The lefty is also rocking a 3.89 ERA and a WHIP of 1.09, so he’s been effective while also benefiting from a lot of run support.

In fairness, one of his three losses this season came against the Giants. When he faced San Francisco in late May, Urias was touched for six earned runs on 11 hits over five innings of work. The Giants have also scored at least six runs in three of their first five games since the break, although there are obvious concerns with both Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford on the IL right now.

In the Spider’s Webb

It’ll be up to Logan Webb to keep the Los Angeles lineup under wraps on Wednesday. The 24-year-old has quietly become a huge part of San Francisco’s success this year, going 4-3 with a 3.54 ERA over 11 starts and one relief appearance. After spending June and early July in the minors, Webb has conceded just one run over seven innings in his two starts since being recalled earlier this month.

Webb also held his own against the Dodgers when facing them in late May, allowing one earned run over five innings while striking out seven. Of course, the LA lineup has picked it up since then, averaging nearly seven runs per game since the all-star break. Chris Taylor, Max Muncy, and Justin Turner have combined for eight home runs in five games since the break, helping make up for Cody Bellinger’s continued struggles.

Don’t Bet Against It

The Giants are surely ailing at the moment, so it’s tough to bet on them, even as underdogs. The trio of Muncy, Taylor, and Turner is capable of doing a lot of damage while Urias starting usually equals a win for Los Angeles. Bet on the Dodgers to beat the Giants on Wednesday.
