Thursday Night Football for Week 1 of the National Football League will kick off the new season. The Detroit Lions are on the road at the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Detroit Lions are coming off a 9-8 season in 2022, where the Lions missed the postseason by a single game. Many are projecting the Lions to win the division in 2023.
For Kansas City, of course, after winning the AFC West and AFC title, they went on to win the Super Bowl. In that game, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles. The Kansas City Chiefs come into this game on Thursday Night at -6.5. The total for this game is listed at 54 points.
Mahomes and Company Ready to Repeat
The whole league knows the Kansas City Chiefs story. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce. Those two will be connected strongly again for 2023. A season ago, Mahomes threw over 5,200 yards, with 1,338 of them to Kelce.
The tight end also led the team with 12 touchdowns. Second on the team was Jerick McKinnon, who was the starting running back. He also returns to the Kansas City offense.
Isaiah Pacheco is another guy that returns for the Chiefs. A season ago, he played every game and came away with 83- yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Kansas City lost Ju Ju Smith-Schuster as the second-best receiver, but guys like Marquez Valdes-Scalting and others should fill the void.
Kansas City goes on the road in Week 2 at Jacksonville before returning to Kansas City for a Week 3 tilt against the Bears. The Chiefs lost at the Saints in preseason and then beat the Cardinals and Browns.
Upstart Lions Looking to Shock NFL World
The Detroit Lions, led by head coach Dan Campbell, would love to show the NFL world to start the season. The Lions are one of the teams in the NFL that experts are picking for the postseason after missing last season.
Detroit must do so with a complete overhaul at the running back position. Gone are Deandre Swift and Jamaal Williams, and in are Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Gibbs was the 12 pick in the draft out of Alabama.
The biggest threat in the offense will once again be Amon-Ra St. Brown. The receiver was outstanding last season, with just under 1,200 yards. He led the team with six receptions as well.
Jared Goff is back under center for Detroit. Goff was able to play all 17 games a season ago, throwing for 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns.
