College Football News and Notes: TCU Lands First Ever Five-Star Recruit

Coach Gary Patterson has used the team’s 2019 success to land five-star recruit Zachary Evans. Multiple outlets had Evans ranked as the number one running back in the 2021 class.

Evans originally signed on with Georgia but was released from his NLI in the spring. Some off-the-field troubles crept up and Evans decided to stay closer to his native Houston.

Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Florida were just a few of the schools that sought after Evans. He had a few visits scheduled, but they had to be canceled because of the coronavirus.

Evans was suspended from the team’s state championship game. He apologized at the All-American game. Evans was the first ever five-star recruit to sign with TCU.

PAC-12 May Play Only a Conference Schedule

The PAC-12 announced that they are looking at only playing the other members of the conference this season. This would lessen the usual schedule from 11 to 12 games, but would reduce travel and hopefully limit exposure to the virus.

Only the bigger conferences can play a schedule like this, but the SEC and Big Ten would both be able to pull off a similar model if every team in the conference plays. The non-conference schedules for this season would have to be scrapped, but with six weeks to make the decision and notify other schools, this seems like a real possibility.

While we wouldn’t get to see Ohio State/Oregon, Washington/Michigan or Utah/BYU, the scheduling would make sense. Those games could always be made up in a later season to fulfill any contract needs.

Look for other conferences that have at least ten teams to explore a similar option. The SEC and Big Ten both have enough members to pull off a similar setup. The big question for the Big Ten will be how many teams are eligible to play this year as a few of their home states have rising numbers of Covid-19 cases.

UConn Signs Deal with CBS

UConn has recently left the American Athletic Conference and become independent. Without the power of Notre Dame, the Huskies did pretty well to leverage a $1 million-plus four-year contract with the CBS Sports Network.

UConn plays in the Big East in most of the other sports, but since it is not a football conference, they had to search elsewhere. When the AAC signed a deal with ESPN that increased revenue for the conference, the Huskies were unhappy. The old deal moved most of the games to ESPN+ and limited their national exposure.

Philip Rivers Has Coaching Job Once He Retires

Although Rivers, who signed with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, is primed and ready to play this fall, his next job is already lined up. When Rivers retires, he is set to become the new head coach of St. Michael Catholic High School.

Rivers’ dad was a successful high school coach. He will coach the Alabama high school team once he decides to hang up his NFL cleats.
