In a press release from Tuesday, Texas Tech basketball announced that some players and staff had tested positive for the Coronavirus. The names of the players were not disclosed due to privacy laws, but the number of infected is believed to be six. Those who did test positive have been quarantined in accordance with CDC regulations and will be monitored by Texas Tech medical personnel.
The news comes shortly after videos surfaced of the team marching in local protests against police brutality following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. As both football and basketball programs ramp up towards their respective seasons, many schools are experiencing several exposures and positive tests that now must be dealt with.
Gina Ford vs. Zion Williamson: Push for Discovery Continues
Justification of discovery (deposition under oath) continued earlier this week as DMV records and improved housing were submitted to the court. Gina Ford, Zion Williamson’s former marketing agent, claims that the former Blue Devil’s superstar received improper benefits from the school.
Ford’s attorneys submitted DMV records on Tuesday showing that three vehicles were registered in Williamson’s name between December of 2017 and April of 2019. Those vehicles were a 2018 Mercedes Benz, a 2016 GMC Yukon, and a 2015 Cadillac Escalade.
Further documentation showed that prior to Williamson’s enrollment at Duke, the family lived a home valued at $153,000 and was rented for $895 a month. Following Zion’s commitment to Duke, the family moved to North Carolina and resided in a property valued at $950,000 with a monthly rental fee of $4,995. The property is believed to be owned by a Duke alumnus named Thomas Morris.
Williamson, who is now playing in the NBA, had previously filed a restraining order to avoid answering questions under oath, which did not hold up in court.
Wake Forest Continues to Add Transfers
Newly minted Demon Deacon’s head coach Steve Forbes added another transfer this week in former Tennessee forward Jalen Johnson. Johnson is the fifth incoming transfer to the Wake Forest program since the end of the 2019-20 season, and the second for Forbes in roughly a week.
Last week, Forbes added one of his former ETSU players to the fold in guard Daivien Williamson. Before he arrived in Winston-Salem, the Deacs welcomed Ian Dubose of Houston Baptist, Isaiah Wilkins of Virginia Tech, and Jonah Antonio via JUCO. Wake Forest now has eleven scholarship players with two spots left to fill.
Johnson averaged 3.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game last season for the Vols in just a shade under 16 minutes per game. He had a more profound role in the rotation in 2019-20. Unfortunately, his efficiency numbers took a hit as he shot just 31.9% from behind the arc and 37% from the field overall. Johnson does possess a high level of athleticism, however, and should help in the short term while Coach Forbes puts his program together.
