Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo Betting Preview

One of the biggest boxing events of the calendar year is coming this weekend from Las Vegas when the biggest star in boxing, Canelo Alvarez, meets undisputed light middleweight champion Jermell Charlo in the ring on Saturday night.

Charlo is moving up two weight classes to challenge Canelo for his undisputed super middleweight belts in what would be a historic night for boxing if he can pull it off. We will get to witness yet another massive moment for Canelo as he looks to add to his long resume of undefeated champions he has beaten.

Let’s take a closer look at this matchup and find out who to bet on and why.

Canelo Alvarez – Are His Best Days Behind Him?

A narrative going around sports media this week is that Canelo might be past his prime. At only 33 years old, it’s tough to imagine that being past his best days–but we don’t know how much of a toll his body has been through after over 60 professional fights.

With that being said, Canelo’s fight IQ, accuracy, and counterpunching are some of the best we’ve ever seen lace the gloves up in the ring. The only fighters to ever solve the puzzle and beat him are the best to ever do it, and a man that was physically bigger and stronger than him.

Canelo’s game plan is going to be similar to his previous bouts. He will look to use his footwork to cut off the ring from a very active Charlo and then break him down by landing to the body and setting up fight-changing shots as the rounds go by.

Jermell Charlo – He Belongs

Jermell Charlo is getting overlooked by a lot of “experts” because he wasn’t even the Charlo brother people wanted to see fighting Canelo in the first place. If you are doubting the chances of Charlo in this one, you will be greatly mistaken.

He’s coming up from two weight classes down, but let’s not forget that Canelo is not that big, and he has gained a lot of size in recent years. Charlo is the same age as Canelo, but he is much younger in boxing years due to how many fewer rounds he’s been in.

The athleticism and self-confidence of Charlo will be his biggest weapon on Saturday night. If Charlo can start fast and steal rounds, he also has the cardio to be able to have more output in the later rounds than his opponent. He is going to give Canelo a very tough fight and be in the mix for all 12 rounds unless a flash KO happens.

Alvarez vs. Charlo Pick and Prediction

Since looking over the tape from both guys, previewing the betting lines, and looking at what these two bring to the table, this fight is a lot closer than the odds might suggest.

The official prediction for this undisputed title bout is still going to be Canelo getting his hand raised, but it’s going to be a very close fight. To be honest, it wouldn’t be surprising if this fight ended in a draw. +1800 is a big payout line, and it’s very possible Charlo ends up winning six or seven rounds, and Canelo saves himself with a flash knockdown in the middle rounds to tie up the scorecard.
